RetroWoW is a custom World of Warcraft 1.12.1 private server that has been running since January 2015, offering a unique take on classic WoW gameplay. Players start instantly at level 60 and can choose between free Dungeon Set 2 gear or blue starter items from vendors. All major raid content, including Molten Core, Onyxias Lair, ZulGurub, AhnQiraj 20 and 40, Blackwing Lair, and Naxxramas, is fully scripted and rebalanced for 5-player groups, with no attunements required and a raid reset every 2 days to encourage fast progression.

Epic gear from Tier 1 to Tier 3 and sets from all classic raids are available for gold via custom vendors. The server features custom PvE, PvP, and raid quests that reward gold, flasks, and scrolls, along with a PvP token system where players earn tokens for kills, which can be exchanged for gear, enchants, and gold.

Cross-faction battlegrounds reduce wait times, and Arena matches in 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 formats award Arena Tokens for both wins and losses. A custom Team Deathmatch battleground adds a new layer of competition where the first team to reach 50 deaths loses. The transmogrification system allows players to change item appearances, and daily quests reward Daily Tokens that can be spent at the Daily Quartermaster for cosmetic items, flasks, transmogs, and more.

In the Gurubashi Arena, kills reward gold with a cooldown, and players respawn at faction-specific graveyards, with options to resurrect at their corpse or via the spirit healer. Duel Reset is available through a toggle command that refreshes health and cooldowns automatically. Alterac Valley is scaled to 20 versus 20 to maintain the full experience while improving queue times.

Dungeons and elite zones are tuned for solo or small group play, although most gear is available from the mall. A teleporter system allows instant access to raids, quest zones, arenas, and custom events. Recipe Tokens earned in Azshara Crater can be used to acquire rare profession recipes, and a dedicated profession zone provides everything needed to level professions efficiently.

Players can customize their characters using NPCs to change race, faction, gender, appearance, and more. An Event NPC is available for teleporting to custom PvP zones and organizing events. The server includes advanced line-of-sight calculations using MMaps and VMaps for more accurate spell casting and movement logic.

A custom anti-cheat system detects and bans cheaters automatically, while a daily backup system secures all server and character data. Useful game commands include .duelmod on or off to control duel resets, .maxskill to instantly max out all skills, and .go commands to queue for battlegrounds like Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, and Alterac Valley directly from chat.
